About BCNPHA

BCNPHA started in 1993 when non-profit housing providers across British Columbia came together at a first annual conference. It now acts as the umbrella organization for the province's non-profit housing societies.

Members are non-profit housing providers, grouped by how many units they operate. Categories run from 1-10 units up to 1,501 units and more. Each provider member votes at the annual general meeting. Associate members (developers still building, charities, government, and commercial firms) join without voting rights.

The association added an education department in 2000, built a research team between 2007 and 2009, and formed an asset management team in 2011 to help members invest in energy efficiency. Its research work produced the Canadian Rental Housing Index and a 10-year affordable housing plan for BC.

BCNPHA is one of three groups in the Housing Central alliance, alongside the Aboriginal Housing Management Association (AHMA) and the Co-operative Housing Federation of BC (CHF BC). The three publish joint policy work, including the 2024 plan "Build More. Protect More. A New Affordable Housing Plan for BC."

How to get involved

Concrete ways to support BCNPHA.

  • If you are developing affordable multiplex rental, partner with a BCNPHA member society that can own or operate the units long-term.
  • Non-profit housing providers can join as voting members; fees are scaled by units operated (1-10 units up to 1,501+).
  • Developers still in pre-construction, government, and commercial firms can join as associate members.
  • Attend the Housing Central Conference or a regional RENT event to meet providers, funders, and policymakers.

Working with a non-profit housing provider on affordable rental? BCNPHA is where those societies organize.
