Meet Michael Leckie

Leckie Studio Architecture + Design is an interdisciplinary studio founded in 2015 by Michael Leckie, MAIBC, AAA. The practice spans residential, commercial, hospitality, and public projects across Western Canada.

In 2024, the BC Ministry of Housing selected Leckie Studio to produce ten typological designs for the Standardized Housing Design Project — the free, publicly-available catalogue of duplex, triplex, quadplex, and townhouse designs intended to fast-track approvals on lots opened up by Bill 44.

Michael Leckie has described the catalogue designs as modern interpretations of local building vernacular across BC, built around mix-and-match blocks adaptable to a range of site conditions, floor areas, roof forms, and aesthetics.

Why work with Michael

01

The standard-setter for BC multiplex

When the province needed a free catalogue of multiplex designs to fast-track Bill 44 approvals, they hired Leckie Studio. If you've seen a typological multiplex rendering on a BC Housing page, you've seen their work.

02

Modern vernacular, not generic

The catalogue and the studio’s custom work both reject "designed-by-zoning-bylaw" boxes. Roof forms, massing, and material palettes are tuned to neighbourhood character.

03

Adaptable building-block system

Leckie's blocks-based approach lets one design template flex across multiple sites — useful for repeat builders running parallel multiplex projects.

Frequently asked questions

Did Leckie Studio design ALL BC multiplexes?
No. The standardized designs are a free public catalogue meant as one option to accelerate approvals. Builders are free to commission custom designs from any AIBC architect (and most do, on lots where the catalogue doesn’t fit cleanly).
Can I hire Leckie Studio directly for a custom multiplex?
Yes — the studio takes private commissions for multiplex and small-multifamily work in addition to the public catalogue. Lead times reflect that they are now a high-profile firm.
