Meet Marken Design + Consulting

Marken Design + Consulting is a Vancouver building design and consulting studio that works in Passive House, Net Zero and Zero Emissions construction. The office is at #300-225 West 8th Ave in Mount Pleasant.

The firm designed the Vancouver Passive Duplex, certified in 2015 — the first Certified Passive House MURB (multi-unit residential building) duplex in Vancouver. It is a two-unit building with triple-pane windows, a heat recovery ventilation system, an airtight thermal-bridge-free envelope, and a gross floor area of about 280 m². Passive House Canada credits Marken as the architect/designer on the project.

Marken has worked on more than 30 Passive House projects across Canada, the United States and Europe, including the first residential Passive House in Canada certified by the German Passivhaus Institute. The studio also designed a west-coast modern single-family Passive House on an RS1-zoned lot in East Vancouver, set up as one of the city's first Zero Emissions Buildings with a 3.6 kW rooftop solar system.

The team holds Certified Passive House Designer and Consultant credentials and offers green building design, energy modelling, and Passive House consulting for new construction and renovations.

Why work with Marken

01

Built the first certified PH duplex in the city

Marken closed every envelope and ventilation detail to the certifier's standard on Vancouver's first Certified Passive House MURB duplex. That same detailing — triple-pane glazing, heat recovery ventilation, airtight thermal-bridge-free assemblies — applies directly to a modern multiplex aiming at the upper BC Energy Step Code tiers.

02

Zero Emissions and Net Zero experience

The studio designed a single-family Zero Emissions Building on an RS1 lot in East Vancouver with rooftop solar. As Vancouver pushes new buildings toward zero-emissions targets, that hands-on experience matters for multiplex owners planning for the same requirements.

03

Energy modelling in-house

Marken offers Passive House consulting and energy modelling, so the performance numbers a permit set needs can be produced alongside the design rather than outsourced later.

Frequently asked questions

Does Marken provide an architectural stamp, or do I still need a registered architect?
Marken is a Certified Passive House design and consulting studio. On projects that require an AIBC architect's stamp on the permit set, confirm directly whether Marken stamps in-house or partners with a registered architect, and have Marken lead the Passive House and energy performance side.
Why pick a Passive House designer for a multiplex?
A multiplex has to meet the BC Energy Step Code and Vancouver's zero-emissions rules. A designer who has already certified a Passive House duplex knows the envelope, airtightness and ventilation details that pass — which reduces redesign and rework later in the build.
What does Marken actually deliver?
Green building design for new construction and renovations, Passive House consulting, and energy modelling, for residential and mixed-use projects in Vancouver, Metro Vancouver and across Western Canada.
