Meet Trotter & Morton

Trotter & Morton was founded on August 9, 1927 by W.B. Trotter and Howard Morton as a plumbing and heating company. One of its early employees, Curly Watson, held the first journeyman plumber ticket issued in Alberta.

Over the decades the firm grew past plumbing into full mechanical, electrical, and facility work. It added an electrical division by acquiring Hutchison Electric in 1988, picked up Bow River Paving in 2011, and continued buying trade businesses, including Fred Welsh Mechanical in 2024 and Draw Energy in 2025.

Today the Trotter & Morton Group of Companies runs more than a dozen offices across Canada and the United States and employs in the range of 1,000 staff. Plumbing is offered out of two locations, Calgary and Vancouver. Dave Ryan has been CEO since 2020.

For multiplex work in Vancouver, this is a commercial and multi-family mechanical contractor rather than a small residential plumber. Their Building Technologies group has won mechanical contractor awards from the Vancouver Regional Construction Association.

Why work with Trotter & Morton

01

Mechanical scope under one contractor

Trotter & Morton handles plumbing, heating, HVAC, and electrical in-house. On a multiplex that can mean fewer separate trade contracts to coordinate for the mechanical and electrical scope.

02

Vancouver plumbing branch

Plumbing is run out of only two locations, Calgary and Vancouver, so BC multi-family work is served by a local branch rather than out-of-province crews.

03

Long track record

The firm has run continuously since 1927 and has been named to Canada’s Best Managed Companies list every year since 2017, reaching Platinum status. For an owner worried about a contractor folding mid-build, that is a real stability signal.
