Meet Bartlett Tree Experts

The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company was founded in 1907 by Francis A. Bartlett. It is a fourth-generation, family-owned business and one of the larger tree-care companies in North America.

Bartlett built its own research base early. Francis Bartlett opened the Bartlett Arboretum in Stamford, Connecticut, in 1913 as a training school, and established the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories in 1927. That lab still backs the field offices with diagnostic and soil science work.

In British Columbia, the company operates as The F.A. Bartlett Tree Expert Company (Canada) with its Canadian head office in Victoria. A Delta office at 6201 60th Avenue serves South Vancouver, Richmond, White Rock, Surrey, Langley, North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen.

For development projects, Bartlett arborists run tree inventories, assess which trees can be kept, and write tree preservation and protection plans. The firm prepared the tree preservation plan for the UBC Museum of Anthropology during its seismic upgrade, where the goal was to keep the existing landscape intact.

Why work with Bartlett

01

Tree protection plans the city expects

Vancouver and most Metro municipalities require a tree protection or preservation plan before they issue a development or building permit on lots with protected trees. Bartlett arborists produce these plans, including the inventory, retention assessment, and protection measures.

02

Documented work on a high-profile site

Bartlett prepared the tree preservation plan for the UBC Museum of Anthropology during its seismic upgrade. That plan is part of the public UBC planning record.

03

A research lab behind the field crew

Bartlett has run its own Tree Research Laboratories since 1927. Field arborists can send soil and plant samples for diagnosis rather than guessing at why a tree is failing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an arborist report for a multiplex project?
Usually yes. If your lot has trees that meet the municipal protected-tree threshold, the city will ask for an arborist report and a tree protection plan as part of the permit. The plan shows which trees stay, which can be removed, and how the retained trees are fenced and protected during construction.
Does Bartlett serve the Vancouver area?
Yes. Bartlett runs a Delta office at 6201 60th Avenue covering South Vancouver, Richmond, White Rock, Surrey, Langley, North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen, plus a Victoria office that is the Canadian head office.
Is Bartlett a local firm or a chain?
Bartlett is a fourth-generation family company founded in 1907, with offices across North America and a Canadian head office in Victoria. Local work is done by the BC offices, backed by the company-wide Tree Research Laboratories.

Call the Delta office to scope a tree protection plan for your lot before you file for permit.
