Meet GeoPacific Consultants

GeoPacific Consultants Ltd. is a geotechnical engineering firm started in Vancouver in 1985. It works on the soil and ground side of construction: testing the site, designing foundations, planning how to dig and hold back the soil during excavation, and watching the ground during the build.

Matt Kokan owns and runs the firm. He joined GeoPacific in 1993 as a young engineer and grew it to its current size. He holds a P.Eng. and an M.A.Sc. and is licensed in British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario. He is a member of the Vancouver Geotechnical Society, the Deep Foundations Institute, and the International Society for Micropiles.

The firm now has six offices: Vancouver, Langley, Victoria, Kelowna, Calgary, and Edmonton. Its head office is at 1779 West 75th Ave in Vancouver. It employs about 200 people and runs its own materials testing laboratory, so soil and concrete testing stays in-house rather than being sent out.

GeoPacific has completed more than 20,000 projects across homes, hotels, offices, mixed-use buildings, and infrastructure. Named work includes the temporary shoring for the Sea to Sky Highway, the Port Mann Bridge, the South Fraser Perimeter Road, the 8x on the Park tower, the Brentwood Keystone Wall, and the Fraser Grain Terminal.

Why work with GeoPacific

01

In-house testing lab

GeoPacific runs its own materials testing laboratory. Soil and concrete samples are tested within the firm instead of being shipped to a third party, which keeps results and schedule under one roof on a multiplex project.

02

Shoring and excavation experience

Most multiplex sites need a plan to dig out for parking or a basement without the soil or the neighbour’s yard moving. GeoPacific designs excavation and shoring, including temporary shoring on large jobs like the Sea to Sky Highway and Port Mann Bridge.

03

Seismic site classification for permit

Vancouver building permits require a seismic site classification. GeoPacific does the site investigation and classification that the structural engineer and the city need before a multiplex foundation can be designed.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a geotechnical engineer for a Vancouver multiplex?
In most cases yes. The city asks for a geotechnical report and a seismic site classification before it approves the foundation, and any excavation near a property line needs a shoring plan. GeoPacific covers all three.
What does GeoPacific actually do on a project?
They start with a site investigation — drilling and testing the soil. From that they recommend the foundation type, design how to dig and shore the excavation, classify the site for seismic, and monitor the ground during construction.
Where does GeoPacific work?
It has six offices: Vancouver, Langley, Victoria, Kelowna, Calgary, and Edmonton. The head office is on West 75th Ave in Vancouver and covers the Lower Mainland.
