Meet Read Jones Christoffersen (RJC) Engineers

Read Jones Christoffersen (RJC) is a structural engineering and building science firm. It was founded in 1948 in Vancouver by John Read, Peter Jones, and Per Christoffersen, starting in a small sublet office.

The firm is employee-owned. It has grown from that one Vancouver office to offices in major cities across Canada, including Victoria, Nanaimo, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, Kitchener, Kingston, and Montreal.

RJC does structural engineering, building science, structural restoration, parking facility design, and building energy modelling. The work runs from custom homes through mid-rise multi-family buildings.

The Vancouver office is at 1285 West Broadway, Suite 300. The structural team there is led by Managing Principal Jeff Corbett, P.Eng., who also leads the Kelowna structural team. Corbett is a UBC graduate, a Fellow of Engineers Canada, and a former member of the Vancouver Urban Design Panel.

Why work with RJC

01

Multi-family and mid-rise experience

RJC works across the range from custom homes to mid-rise multi-family buildings. That matters for a multiplex that pushes past four units or crosses into Part 3 of the building code, where the structural rules change.

02

Building science under one roof

The firm does building science alongside structural work — envelope, moisture, and energy modelling. On a multiplex that can mean one consultant covering structure and envelope instead of coordinating two separate firms.

03

Local leadership, national bench

Jeff Corbett leads the Vancouver structural team and stays involved in his projects start to finish. Behind him sits a firm with offices across the country if a project needs extra depth.

Frequently asked questions

Does RJC handle small multiplex projects, or only large buildings?
RJC works across the range from custom homes to mid-rise multi-family. A small four-plex is within scope, and so is a project that grows past four units into more complex code territory.
Can one firm cover both the structure and the building envelope?
Yes. RJC does both structural engineering and building science, which covers the envelope, moisture, and energy modelling. On a multiplex that can reduce the number of separate consultants you coordinate.
Who leads the Vancouver structural team?
Jeff Corbett, P.Eng., is the Managing Principal for the Vancouver and Kelowna structural teams. He is a UBC graduate and a Fellow of Engineers Canada, and he stays involved in his projects from start to finish.
