Meet Underhill Geomatics

Underhill Geomatics started in late 1913 as Underhill & Underhill, a partnership between brothers Frederic Clare Underhill and James Theodore Underhill. Both trained as civil engineers, and both received their British Columbia Land Surveyor commissions on October 22, 1913. Their first office was in the Lumberman’s Building at 509 Richards Street in Vancouver.

After serving in the First World War, the brothers came back and built up the firm through the 1920s, taking on additional partners from 1922 onward. The company grew alongside BC’s economy and kept adopting new survey technology as it came along.

Today the firm runs offices in Burnaby (its head office), Kamloops, Comox on Vancouver Island, and Whitehorse in the Yukon. LinkedIn lists 51 to 200 employees. Work covers legal and cadastral surveys, strata plans, construction and engineering surveys, topographic surveys, 3D laser scanning, and CAD and orthophoto mapping.

Underhill has worked on large public projects including the Pattullo Bridge replacement, the Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel, the Canada Line rapid transit, and venues for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The firm celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2013.

Why work with Underhill

01

Strata plans for the units you sell

A multiplex that gets stratified needs a registered strata plan before the units can be sold separately. Underhill prepares cadastral and strata surveys, which is the legal survey work the Land Title Office requires.

02

Construction surveys on site

They do construction and engineering surveys, so the same firm can set out building lines, check foundations against the plan, and confirm setbacks as the build goes up.

03

3D laser scanning for existing conditions

For an infill or a tight lot next to existing buildings, their 3D laser scanning captures exact existing conditions, which helps with party-wall situations and verifying boundaries before design starts.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a BC Land Surveyor for a multiplex project?
Yes. A topographic survey is usually needed before design, and if you plan to strata-title and sell the units separately, only a BC Land Surveyor can prepare the strata plan the Land Title Office will register. Underhill is a firm of BC Land Surveyors (BCLS).
Where is Underhill located?
Their head office is at 301-8337 Eastlake Drive in Burnaby, phone 604-732-3384. They also have offices in Kamloops, Comox on Vancouver Island, and Whitehorse, Yukon.
Can the same firm handle both the legal survey and the on-site construction survey?
Yes. Underhill does cadastral and legal surveys, strata plans, and construction and engineering surveys, so one firm can cover the project from the boundary survey through construction layout.
